Watchung Winter Ultra Run (35 Mile): A Blistering Cold Adventure!

It was Friday night, the night before my 50K (plus bonus miles) Winter Ultra marathon on the Watchung reservation in North/ Central New Jersey.    I could not sleep at all because I was so concerned about the bitter cold temperatures.  (I have issues with my circulation where my fingers turn white and numb when I get cold!) The usual remedy is running my fingers under HOT water! I am training for my first 100 mile ultra (Umstead) in North Carolina in March so I signed up for this WINTER race to get the distance training in, as I only have about 7 weeks left of training. A Cold and Blistery Day On Saturday Morning, sure enough as predicted from the forecast, the temperature was 22 degrees; but, it felt like in the teens with the wind factor.   Though I was dreading facing the bitter cold temperature, I was excited about doing this race especially with a whole group of other crazy runners, including a bunch of my friends from the Jersey Shore!  It beats running 6 hours alone! So the plan was to dress warmly and stay hydrated.   I packed extra warm clothes in case I need to change into dry clothes in between the loops. The 50k (32 miles) consisted of 3 loops of 10.7 miles.  It was on the Watchung reservation in North-Central NJ.    There were about 100 + runners, about 1/3 did the full 32 miles and others did either 1 or 2 loops. As I was registering, adding warm layers, and pouring water, and  packing my  Gu gel, I was mentally preparing myself to brave... read more

Why Creating An EXPERIENCE For Your Customers Is Key For Long Term Success…

Have you ever bought products or services because you had excellent customer service or you had an exceptionally memorable experience?  With so many great choices of products to choose from these days, how do you decide? What factors influence your decision from being prospective customer to an actual buying customer? This past week—the day after finishing my first 50 Mile ultramarathon, Jon (my fiancé) and I spent a few days in wine Country (Napa Valley and Sonoma CA).    Though I had been there before and enjoyed it immensely (who wouldn’t in beautiful wine country), this time was even more spectacular. So I started to reflect why this trip was so MEMORABLE.  I realized that it was not just the amazing wines that we had, but it was the overall unique EXPERIENCE at each winery.    It was almost like going to Disney World—each theme ride is a special event itself. We met some of the kindest people who were “experience makers” and really made a difference in providing a memorable event.   Though some wines were better than the others, it was their service that stood out and influenced our decision to buy some of the wines. (If you are a wine enthusiast and you want to learn more detail about the wines and wineries we visited, then you will also want to read this review written by my fiancé, Jon Brodsky, who is an avid wine enthusiast. Read this wine review! I would like to share with you just a few of these experiences that were so impactful for us.   If you already have an established business or just getting... read more

Napa Valley Trip: Wine Review

This review was written by Jon Brodsky, Wine Aficionado (an informal, detailed –yet entertaining summary of the wineries we visited) Some notes on our trip to Napa / Sonoma this past week.  This is heavily wine oriented and going out to a few friends who I thought might appreciate it and possibly benefit by it on future visits themselves.  It is somewhat detailed. SUNDAY – We took an early flight out of Newark after running a 50 mile race near Boston on Saturday and driving back most of the way to Newark on Saturday night.  Despite getting in at noon to San Francisco, it took us 2 hours to get out of the airport mostly due to long lines at the car rental counter and only 2 agents there.  I was hoping to go to Sonoma as we were staying at Sonoma Mission Inn but we didn’t get to the southern end of the valley until 3.  Nonetheless we did get to some wineries. ARTESA – nice views, southern Napa, 93pt pinot was only average.  Somehow Laura took a bigger hit than I did during the race and she could barely manage the stairs, especially down.  In fairness, having just broken her hand she had hardly worked out for almost 3 months, logging a long run of only 12 miles yet she still managed to run 50 on Saturday.  Still, it felt nice to have the tables turned on the post race stair walking ability.  Wine – unimpressive, didn’t buy any.  Go for views only on a clear day and you can see San Francisco maybe 30 – 40 miles... read more

I Just Ran a 50 Mile Ultramarathon… How My Mindset Helped

Just recently I ran a 50 Mile ultramarathon! I am used to pushing myself a little over the edge, but this was the first time I went WAY beyond my comfort zone in any race I have done in the past. This TOPS all the 6 Ironman’s I have raced including qualifying for the Hawaii Ironman which about 2-3 percent accomplish worldwide.

How to Skyrocket Your Success in 2010: 7 Key principles to Get You There

Happy New Year! Now that we have a new year upon us and a new decade,   we have a fresh opportunity to recharge, reorganize, and to map out the goals and results we expect to achieve in 2010. Every year the days are going by FASTER and FASTER.  Before you know it, another 5, 10, 14 more years will fly by us in a blink of an eye.  So my question is ARE you where you NEED to be—financially, healthy/fit, and relationship?  Are you happy with your results from last year? Maybe you accomplished everything you set out do and even EXCEEDED your expectations… Congratulations- you are at the top of your game!!   But, for those of you who fell short of your goals, what was holding you back?  Did you have an action plan, but didn’t follow through?  Did your own fear of the unknown get in the way? It is so easy to stay within your comfort zone and to continue on status quo.   I find it interesting when I see friends whom I haven’t seen in a while, and I ask what’s new?  And their response is “nothing new”.    I ask why?  Everyday should be a new experience and we should seek new ways to evolve. If you are feeling stagnant and that you have NOT yet taking those GIANT steps forward, that is okay.    It is a New Year and now is the time to break old habits and rewire new patterns that foster growth and measurable results. Here are some core elements to apply as you do ANYTHING.  If you will do this then... read more
